HC grants bail to Mamun

The High Court yesterday granted ad-interim bail for six-months to controversial businessman Giasuddin Al Mamun in a tax dodging case against him.

The HC bench of Justice Syed Muhammad Dastagir Husain and Justice Md Rais Uddin also issued a rule upon the government to explain within four weeks why Mamun should not be granted regular bail in this case.

The court came up with the order upon a bail petition filed by Mamun.

Earlier on October 13, a court in Dhaka rejected a petition of Mamun seeking bail in this case.

On August 26, Deputy Tax Commissioner Ayesha Siddiqui Shelly filed the case with the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court and stated in the complaint that Mamun evaded an income tax of Tk 14 crore as a director of Initex Apparels Ltd.

Barrister Rafique-Ul Huq assisted by advocate SM Sabbir Hamza Chowdhury appeared for Mamun, while Deputy Attorney General AKM Zahid Sarwar Kajal stood for the government.
